How does it work?
SunSun has built an ingenious water guide inside the stainless-steel housing of the CUV-700-series devices: The water, guided through the device, rotates due to its own flow. There is no helix built in whose cleaning would consume a lot of time.
At the same time, the stainless-steel housing assures the reflection of the UV light. Light not directly absorbed is reflected into the water of the pond on which it can act again. This is how the time and intensity of contact between the water and UVC radiation is more than doubled. The entire body of the UV device is made of stainless steel, except the connections and technical part, made of high-quality plastic. This makes the device very stable. The stainless steel used to make the device is polished so that nearly no dirt, that would impair reflection, can deposit on it. The SunSun pond clarifier is characterised by its design, well-thought-out technique, and long service life.
The UVC pond clarifier – normally – makes for limpid water within 14 days, provided that it is combined with a biological pond filter. A UVC pond clarifier irradiates the pond water with UV-C radiation inside a flow-through reactor. A UVC pond clarifier changes the tertiary and quaternary structures of the algal proteins with the help of its radiation, which means that the algae are killed. The algae agglutinate and form larger particles that, with the help of a mechanical filtering process, can be removed easily from the water circulating.
The service life of the UVC lamp goes from 700 to 10,000 hours of operation. Thus, it is advisable to replace the lamp of the UVC unit at the beginning of the pond season of every year, when the temperature of the pond water rises, and to take advantage of the replacement to clean the quartz glass of the UV lamp.
The water circulates through both openings of the UVC clarifier. During this process, all biological contaminations such as floating algae, germs, bacteria, or parasites are reduced. The longer this contact is maintained and the higher the UVC power is, the more effective is the killing of these contaminations.
Which is the size required?
With a koi pond, you should calculate 3 W power per m³ of pond water for the UV clarifier.
When should I use a UVC clarifier?
Is your pond infected with algae?
Do these algae proliferate under strong sunlight?
If you suppose that the number of germs in your pond has increased and you have exhausted all other methods, the durable use of a UVC clarifier is strongly recommended for reducing the germs. A UV lamp is meant to clarify the water of a pond. Floating green algae very quickly proliferate whenever the water of a pond is organically stressed and the sunlight is strong, giving the water a greenish colour. Especially during spring, when temperatures rise and the solar irradiation increases, the pond water becomes murky, which is a nasty thing to see.
A UVC pond clarifier irradiates the pond water with UV-C radiation inside a flow-through reactor.
Sometimes, one can hear the following argument: a UVC clarifier is unnatural. At first sight, this might be correct; yet, it cannot be accepted as a counterargument, as in that case every pond filter and even the entire aquaristics sector would have to be considered as “unnatural.” Another argument is the following: fish living in a pond that is cleaned by a UVC clarifier are effete and get immediately ill when they are placed in another pond. This is not true, and you could very well opine in that case that a biological pond filter is harmful and an increased nitrite value strengthens the fish. Of course, this is nonsense; the opposite is true.
The water flowing through the device is freed from harmful bacteria and germs. Yet, the germs being reduced, the climate of the pond is not affected at all, as the bacteria providing decomposition of noxious substances on stones, in pond filter media, etc. settle in the entire pond system, and it is there where they can continue to proliferate. The UV lamp can maintain the total germ quantity in the water in a healthy, nature-near ratio.
Notes on installation: In accordance with the regulations of the VDE (German Verband der Elektrotechnik, Elektronik und Informationstechnik; Association for Electrical, Electronics, and Information Technology), all electrical devices must be installed at a min. distance of 2 m from the water body.
Note: As the device has a symmetric structure, the connections pipes can both be used as inlet and outlet.
